Thanks for all the comments and emails over the last few weeks. Sorry I have not got back to everyone individually - but it is really nice to hear from you - I really appreciate it! I'm going to do a couple of posts re the quilt fair over the next few days, but had to start the week on a more serious note after seeing 'Manufactured Landscapes' this weekend, by filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal.
This bittersweet documentary about the work of photographer Edward Burtynsky shows the shocking truth of what manufacturing & excavating is doing to the planet, but most fascinatingly the what happens to recycled computers and scrap metals when they reach China. The 'iron-y' of the middle section is particularly poignant. I think it really jabs at your consciousness that recycling is really a bandaid on a much deeper problem - we have to look at manufacturing/consuming and what we expect of others in a new way.
Burtynsky's skill is in making what I would call 'strange beauty' from things that are on an environmental& human scale, incredibly moving. This is a great clip showing highlights on this theme - but if you want to see Burtynsky's beautiful photographs and more images from the film check out the website here.
(We rented it on Lovefilm)
This will shock & inspire you!
Caireen, thanks for the film tip, it sounds really interesting, I'll add that to our movie list. Did you see the Age of Stupid? That was thought provoking too.
