I hadn't thought of it as this until N named it last night... but yesterday decided to cut the grass, and I'd noticed that the bees were really enjoying a patch of clover in amongst it.
So I threw down an old hula hoop we had in the shed and mowed around it. Now there is a little clover patch for bees to keep landing. I quite like it, do you?
It has been a great summer here so far, and even though overcast, it is quite sticky and close.
The other night we took a walk across the fields. The farmers have left a lot of them to grow over this year and they were filled with grasses and buttercups nearly up to waist high. The sun was lighting the tops of the grasses horizontally as it does in that late evening light. I almost wish I'd taken my camera, but it was so much better just to enjoy it.
On the way home we saw a cow who was just starting to give birth to a calf. I could see the head beginning to show. She was looking back there and gently moo-ing, as if to say "what's going on?" - but she looked quite happy and peaceful.
I was unsure whether to call in and let the farmer know - or if he would think I was mad for doing so. In the end it felt ok just to let things take their course... The next day I read in Selvedge magazine about mother alpacas who call to their babies as they are being born, so that they recognise their sound. I wondered if this is what the cow had been doing? I will need Rebecca's thoughts on all this, and farmer/calf etiquette - would you want to know?
I will need to pop round and see if there is a little black calf thundercloud - just like it's mum. On that note, it is thundering here - great drops of rain. The air will clear at last.
what a lovely, gentle post, c. i can just picture your walk through the summer field even though you didn't photograph it. and the bee's crop circle ('clover-plate'?) is lovely.
